Sneak Preview: I am getting ready to publish a new book in January 2022 about how bilinguals can earn income doing written translation.
And that got me thinking about how valuable it is to be bilingual. Let’s look at some of the obvious benefits:
- You are eligible for more jobs (especially in government).
- You can have a wider circle of friends.
- You don’t get lost when travelling in certain countries. 😊
- You have access to more literature and media.
In addition, it opens up the possibility of an ideal work-from-home career: doing written translation. Next week, I’ll be talking more about the income potential of this activity.
But today, I want to point out another opportunity this opens up: involvement in a non-profit. There are so many nonprofits that need written translators to help them make their materials available to other language groups, but often the organization’s budget does not allow for this.
A bilingual person who starts a freelance career in translation can often earn full-time income with part-time hours. This frees up time they can offer to a nonprofit to help with translation.
Christmas is a season for giving, and I encourage you to think about a nonprofit that you could help with your translation skills in the coming year. Even a couple of hours a week would be a blessing!
